The steel pipework’s complex geometry, constant exposure and demanding operating conditions made it more likely that a conventional coating system would fail over time. Fittings and bends are harder to coat evenly than a flat surface, and sustained exposure adds further strain on any protective layer. The pipework needed a coating capable of maintaining continuous protection across this more difficult geometry rather than relying on a standard repaint approach.
BlastOff sandblasted the rusted pipework back to clean steel, removing corrosion across the full run before coating began. A thermoplastic coating was then applied around the complete circumference of the pipework, with the fused polymer wrapping fittings and bends to maintain a continuous protective layer across the more complex sections. This approach was chosen because it forms an unbroken barrier over irregular geometry that a conventional brush or spray paint system would struggle to match.
The pipework returned to service with corrosion arrested and a thermoplastic coating wrapped continuously around its full circumference, including fittings and bends. The fused polymer barrier gives the asset a continuous protective layer designed for long-term durability, addressing the specific vulnerabilities created by the pipework’s complex geometry and demanding operating conditions.
Steel pipework in Avondale, Auckland, presented a harder problem than a flat steel surface would: its complex geometry, constant exposure and demanding operating conditions made it more likely that a conventional coating system would eventually fail. Fittings and bends are difficult to coat evenly with a brush or spray system, and sustained exposure adds further strain on whatever protective layer is applied, so the pipework needed a coating capable of holding continuous protection across these more awkward sections rather than relying on a standard repaint approach.
BlastOff sandblasted the rusted pipework back to clean steel, removing corrosion across the full run before any coating went on. A thermoplastic coating was then applied around the complete circumference of the pipework, with the fused polymer wrapping fittings and bends to maintain one continuous protective layer across the more complex geometry. This approach was chosen because it forms an unbroken barrier over irregular shapes that a conventional paint system would struggle to match consistently. The pipework returned to service with corrosion arrested and a coating system built for long-term durability across its full length.
For operators managing steel pipework or similarly awkward fabricated assets, whether in industrial, commercial or utility settings, the lesson here is that geometry should shape the coating method chosen, not just the level of corrosion present. A flat-surface approach applied to pipework with multiple fittings and bends tends to leave weak points exactly where they are hardest to inspect later. A scoping conversation for comparable assets should cover the full run of pipework, including fittings, bends and any areas where water or debris tends to collect. BlastOff’s thermoplastic coating service for structural steel completed the preparation and coating as one programme.
