The Challenge

Oil stains, rust marks and old spills had built up across the driveway and patio over an extended period, and waterblasting had not been able to fully remove the contamination. Because the staining had worked into the surface of the concrete rather than sitting on top of it, a more targeted treatment was needed to restore an even appearance across both areas.

Our Approach

BlastOff sandblasted the concrete surfaces to remove the staining from within the concrete itself, rather than attempting to treat it with chemicals as had been tried previously without full success. The abrasive process restored an even, refreshed texture across the driveway and patio while also renewing grip underfoot, addressing both the appearance and the surface feel of the concrete in the same treatment.

The Outcome

The concrete was restored to a clean, uniform finish across the driveway and patio, ready to be sealed or left natural as the homeowners prefer. The oil stains, rust marks and old spills that waterblasting had been unable to shift were removed, giving the surfaces a consistent appearance underfoot.

Years of Oil and Rust Stains Removed From a Howick Driveway and Patio

Oil stains, rust marks and old spills had been building up across the driveway and patio of a Howick residence for years, to the point where waterblasting had already been tried and had failed to shift the contamination. That outcome is common with older concrete, since staining that has had time to work into the surface rather than sit on top of it will usually resist pressure washing no matter how thoroughly it is applied.

BlastOff sandblasted the concrete surfaces to remove the staining from within the concrete itself, treating the problem as one of surface contamination rather than something a chemical cleaner could lift away. The abrasive process restored an even, refreshed texture across both the driveway and the patio, and had the added benefit of renewing grip underfoot, addressing the look and the feel of the surface in the same pass.

For homeowners in a similar position, where washing has already been tried without success, this project is a useful marker of what sandblasting can achieve that pressure washing generally cannot: it works into the concrete itself rather than just clearing loose material off the top. It is worth having a conversation early about whether the finished concrete will be sealed or left natural, since that decision affects how the surface should be treated and how it will weather afterwards, and a trial area is a sensible way to confirm the expected result before committing to the full driveway and patio. Deep staining and any prior repairs can still leave some variation visible even after treatment, so it pays to set expectations accordingly.

The Howick concrete was brought back to a clean, uniform finish through concrete surface restoration, ready for the homeowners to seal or leave natural as they prefer.
