The Challenge

Corrosion and failed paint had affected the fire truck’s steelwork, compromising both the protective coating and the vehicle’s appearance. Because the steel needed to be fully assessed as part of the wider repair programme, the existing paint and rust had to be removed first so any hidden corrosion could be identified before repairs and recoating went ahead.

Our Approach

BlastOff sandblasted the fire truck’s steelwork to remove all the existing paint and rust, exposing clean metal across the vehicle. Blasting back to bare steel also revealed any corrosion that had been hidden beneath the old coating, allowing it to be addressed as part of the repair programme. Once the steel was properly prepared, a new three-coat protective system was applied to deliver a durable, uniform finish across the truck.

The Outcome

The fire truck returned to service with its steelwork protected under a new three-coat system and presentable again after the repair programme. Stripping back to bare metal before recoating gave the vehicle a properly prepared surface, addressing both the corrosion and the finish in one coordinated scope of work.

Blasting Back to Bare Metal to Find What Was Hiding Under a Fire Truck's Paint

BlastOff carried out this stage with plant and equipment sandblasting, stripping the fire truck’s steelwork back to clean, bare metal across the vehicle. Blasting back that far revealed corrosion that had been hidden beneath the old paint, allowing it to be addressed as part of the broader repair programme rather than being sealed in under a new finish. Once the steel was properly prepared, a new three-coat protective coating system was applied to deliver a durable, uniform result across the truck.

The vehicle returned to service both protected and presentable, with the corrosion and the finish addressed together in one coordinated scope rather than treated as separate jobs.

For fleet operators and repairers managing similar emergency or commercial vehicles, this project shows the value of blasting back to bare metal as a diagnostic step in its own right, not just a preparation stage.
