The Challenge

The public toilet blocks faced constant tagging alongside ongoing exposure to moisture and frequent heavy cleaning. Layers of old paint had built up on the concrete block walls, concealing the condition of the substrate underneath and leaving it without proper protection. Before any lasting waterproofing or flooring work could go ahead, this build-up needed to be removed to reveal a sound surface suited to a public amenity.

Our Approach

BlastOff sandblasted the concrete block walls to strip away the accumulated paint and graffiti back to a clean substrate. With the surface prepared, a full waterproofing system was applied across the block walls and floor to protect against ongoing moisture in a wet-use public facility. The floor was then finished with a new epoxy coating chosen for its hygienic, hard-wearing and easy-to-clean qualities in a high-traffic public setting.

The Outcome

The public toilet blocks at Eric Armishaw Park in Point Chevalier, Auckland, run by Green by Nature, had taken a beating from constant tagging, ongoing moisture and the heavy cleaning regime that public amenities demand. Years of repainting had left layers of old paint sitting over the concrete block walls, hiding the true condition of the substrate underneath and leaving it without any real protection against water or further damage. Before any lasting fix could go in, that build-up had to come off.

BlastOff sandblasted the walls back to a clean concrete substrate, then applied a full waterproofing system across the block walls and floor to deal with the ongoing moisture that comes with a wet-use public facility. The floor was finished with a new epoxy coating, chosen for being hygienic, hard-wearing and easy to keep clean under heavy foot traffic. Combining sandblasting with waterproofing and a fresh epoxy floor meant each stage built properly on the one before it, rather than being patched over an unknown surface.
