Corrosion had developed around the balustrade’s welds, fixings and water traps, the exact points where conventional paint systems are most vulnerable to failure. These details tend to hold moisture and are difficult for a standard painted coating to protect consistently over time. Left untreated, the corrosion at these points would have continued to undermine the balustrade regardless of how the rest of the surface was finished.
BlastOff sandblasted the rusted balustrade back to bare metal, clearing corrosion from the welds, fixings and water traps that had proven most vulnerable under the previous paint system. A thermoplastic coating was then applied, fusing over the steel in a thick, continuous and flexible layer rather than a series of thin painted coats. This method was chosen specifically to protect the corrosion-prone details identified during preparation, wrapping them in a single unbroken layer.
The balustrade now carries a fused thermoplastic coating in place of the conventional paint that had allowed corrosion to take hold at its welds and fixings. The continuous, flexible layer gives the body corporate protection against impact, abrasion and corrosion without the cracking or peeling that affected the previous painted system, addressing the specific failure points identified before work began.
A body corporate balustrade in Auckland’s CBD had developed corrosion around its welds, fixings and water traps, exactly the points where conventional paint systems tend to fail first. These details hold moisture and are notoriously difficult for a standard painted coating to protect consistently over time, so the balustrade had been caught in a cycle of repainting that never quite resolved the underlying corrosion. Left as it was, the damage at these points would have kept undermining the structure regardless of how well the rest of the surface looked.
BlastOff sandblasted the rusted balustrade back to bare metal, clearing corrosion specifically from the welds, fixings and water traps that had proven most vulnerable under the previous system. A thermoplastic coating was then applied, fusing over the steel in a thick, continuous and flexible layer rather than a series of thin painted coats, chosen precisely because it wraps those corrosion-prone details in one unbroken layer instead of relying on multiple coats to cover the same geometry. The balustrade now carries protection against impact, abrasion and corrosion without the cracking or peeling that affected the earlier painted finish.
Body corporates and property managers dealing with balustrades, railings or similar fabricated steel caught in a repeated repaint cycle should look closely at where the corrosion is actually occurring rather than just the overall condition of the paint. Welds, fixings and any point where water can sit are usually the real problem, and a coating method needs to address those details specifically to break the cycle. A scoping conversation for comparable structures should cover the geometry involved, where corrosion has previously appeared and how the asset is exposed to the weather. BlastOff’s thermoplastic coating service for structural steel carried out the blasting and coating together.
