The Challenge

The steel needed rust removed in a busy CBD location, where the surrounding environment added real constraints to the method chosen. Traditional abrasive blasting would have brought containment requirements, media disposal and dust into a setting with neighbouring properties nearby, raising the risk of dust complaints and additional site management on a site with limited room to manoeuvre.

Our Approach

BlastOff addressed the corrosion with laser cleaning, working the steel members back to sound metal using a dry, low-dust process that produced no abrasive media or chemical waste to manage or dispose of. This kept the work self-contained without the scaffold wraps or media clean-up that abrasive blasting would have needed on a constrained CBD site. Once the steel was clean, a protective coating system suited to the surrounding environment was applied to the prepared surface.

The Outcome

The building owner received renewed protection on the structural steel without the scaffold wraps, media clean-up or wider site disruption that abrasive blasting would have involved. The laser cleaning and coating process was completed with minimal impact on surrounding tenancies, leaving the steel protected in a busy Auckland CBD setting.

Protecting Steel in a Working CBD Site Without Scaffold Wraps or Media Clean-up

A fabricator’s warehouse in Auckland’s CBD needed rust removed from its structural steel, but the location added real constraints to how that could be done.
