The existing line marking needed to come off, but the standard removal options carried real risk. Grinding or more aggressive blasting would have lifted the paint while also scarring the concrete surface underneath and generating dust across an active manufacturing floor. With production continuing nearby, any method that damaged the substrate or spread contamination through the facility was not workable, so a gentler removal process was required.
BlastOff selected soda blasting for this project because the sodium bicarbonate media lifts surface coatings such as line marking without cutting into the concrete beneath it. The process was run as a fully contained operation, with dust and residue managed so the work could proceed inside the live manufacturing environment. This let the removal happen close to ongoing production without introducing scarring, excess dust or downtime for the facility.
The redundant line marking was completely removed from the East Tamaki facility floor, leaving the concrete surface intact and undamaged beneath it. The area was left clean and ready to accept a new layout, and the healthcare manufacturing operation continued running throughout the work with no interruption to production caused by the removal process.
At Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s manufacturing facility in East Tamaki, Auckland, BlastOff was asked to remove redundant line marking from the concrete floor so a new layout could go down in its place. The obvious removal routes, grinding or a more aggressive blasting method, carried real risk in this setting: both would have lifted the paint but also scarred the concrete beneath it and thrown dust across a floor where production was continuing throughout the works. That combination ruled out anything abrasive enough to damage the substrate or disperse contamination through a healthcare manufacturing environment.
BlastOff addressed this with soda blasting, using sodium bicarbonate media to lift the old line marking cleanly while leaving the concrete underneath untouched. The process was run fully contained, with dust and residue managed on site, which meant the removal work could happen close to live production without forcing a shutdown.
The result was a floor stripped back to bare concrete, intact and ready for the new marking scheme, with the facility operating around the crew the entire time.
For other manufacturing or healthcare sites carrying old line marking, signage residue or coating remnants on their floors, this project is a useful reference point: the removal method matters as much as the result. Grinding and coarse abrasive blasting can leave a slab pitted or uneven, which then telegraphs through any new marking or coating applied afterwards. A gentler, contained process protects the substrate and keeps the surface consistent for whatever comes next. Any owner scoping similar work should ask what the concrete needs to look like once the old marking is gone, not just what needs to disappear, and should factor containment and dust control into the plan from the outset if the site has to stay operational.
