The Challenge

CSL Containers’ equipment operates outdoors year-round, and the coatings protecting it had failed over time, allowing corrosion to take hold on the steel. Left unaddressed, that corrosion would have continued to reduce the condition and safe working life of the equipment, so the plant needed to be properly stripped back and reassessed before any new coating could be applied.

Our Approach

BlastOff sandblasted the plant and equipment to remove the old, failed paint and surface rust, working back to bare, sound steel across the equipment. With the substrate properly exposed and profiled, a new three-coat protective system was applied, selected for constant outdoor industrial service to suit how the equipment is used. The blasting and coating stages were carried out as one sequence to keep the finish consistent across the plant.

The Outcome

The refurbished plant and equipment returned to service for CSL Containers with corrosion protection restored across the steel. Removing the old paint and rust before recoating gave the equipment a properly prepared substrate under the new three-coat system, rather than a fresh coating applied over existing corrosion.

Keeping Outdoor Container-Handling Gear Ahead of Corrosion at CSL Containers

Equipment that works outdoors year-round, as CSL Containers’ container-handling plant at Otahuhu, Auckland does, is always working against the weather as well as its operational load. When the coatings protecting that equipment eventually failed, corrosion began establishing itself on the steel, and left unaddressed, it would have kept reducing both the condition and the safe working life of the plant. Rather than simply touching up the visible damage, the equipment needed to be stripped back and properly reassessed before any new coating could go on with confidence.

BlastOff carried out that work with plant and equipment sandblasting, removing the old, failed paint and surface rust back to bare, sound steel across the equipment. With the substrate properly exposed and profiled, a new three-coat protective coating system was applied, selected to suit constant outdoor industrial service and repeated handling rather than a general-purpose finish. Carrying out the blasting and coating as one continuous sequence kept the result consistent across the plant, and the equipment returned to service with its corrosion protection properly restored on a substrate that had actually been prepared for it.

For operators running comparable outdoor plant, whether container handling gear, yard equipment or fixed industrial assets, the practical lesson is that coating failure is rarely just cosmetic. Once rust is visible, the steel underneath is usually already compromised, and a scoping conversation should focus on how far that corrosion has spread, what preparation standard the steel needs to reach, and which coating system will actually hold up to the equipment’s day-to-day outdoor exposure. Treating blasting and coating as one continuous project, rather than two separately scheduled jobs, also helps avoid gaps where freshly exposed steel is left unprotected.
